Topaz Arts is pleased to present a showing by resident artist Mariah Maloney who will share her residency cultivations in process, as well as a 2008 solo dance created in collaboration with Lad Lane, a Dublin based Traditional Irish Music band.  The Topaz Arts dance residency has provided Maloney with a space to reflect and move deeper in her interdisciplinary collaborations. She hopes to share the journey at the showing and appreciates the audience presence and feedback.

Mariah Maloney’s residency has brought forward explorations with dancers Breckyn Drescher and Joyce D. Edwards in collaboration with composer Loren Loiacono.  Loiacono and Maloney’s first collaboration occurred earlier this year where Loiacono was commissioned by the Albany Symphony Water Music Celebration with funding by The New York State Council on the Arts.  On December 17, at 3:00pm Maloney will share residency cultivations in process as well as a 2008 solo dance created in collaboration with Lad Lane, a Dublin based Traditional Irish Music band.

About the Artist:

Mariah is the artistic director of Mariah Maloney Dance, an organization dedicated to presenting Maloney’s choreography and interdisciplinary collaborations. Originally from Homer, Alaska, Mariah is a New York City/Brockport based dance artist presenting choreography nationally and internationally.  Mariah grew up listening to her mother play live chamber music inside a homesteader log cabin.  This early relationship to live music informs Mariah’s dance making process today. A former Trisha Brown Dance Company soloist and ensemble dancer (1995-2002), Maloney’s work is described as a clear and charming engagement with formalism in post-modern dance.  Founded in 2003, Mariah Maloney Dance has toured throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. The company presented an evening of work at The International Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Inside/Out series. The company is produced at venues in New York City such as La MaMa etc, The Kitchen, Danspace Project, Mark Morris Dance Center and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.  2017 projects include the Marlin Miller Guest Artist Series at Alfred University, Alfred, NY; Albany Symphony and Loren Loiacono Bicentennial Water Music Celebration, Rochester Fringe Festival; Buenos Aires Dance Festival, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Maloney serves as Associate Professor and Graduate Director at The Department of Dance, The College at Brockport, SUNY. Mariah earned a BFA from Purchase College and a MFA from Hollins/ADF. Maloney recently contributed an article to Dance Magazine where she shared the experience of dancing Trisha Brown’s work all night at the Brooklyn Public Library.  Mariah is thrilled to be awarded a 2017 Topaz Arts Residency. www.mariahmaloneydance.com
